The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently research forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his crime policy is that if someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and clear reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of radical love focused on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and requests to the best parts of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?
The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply pretending the most negative about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both humility and conviction, a blend that genuine US believers should embrace.
