The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
